“Second Chances” in the Low Gallery

Featuring Paul Baylock and Claudio DaNapoli

An excerpt from… Explore “Second Chances” at the Art League of New Britain

Featuring the works of award-winning mixed media artists Paul Baylock and Claudio DaNapoli, this exhibition delves into the concept of second chances, both in art and in life.  Not coincidentally, art is a second career for both artists.

Baylock’s art draws inspiration from vintage publications and local New Britain iconography, transforming them into vibrant acrylic and vinyl paintings that evoke a sense of nostalgia and memory. Through his layered compositions, Baylock offers forgotten images a chance to reclaim their former glory, and an appreciation for that which came before – all enveloped in a fresh and modern vibe.

Similarly, finding traditional photography insufficient to tell the stories he envisioned, DaNapoli’s artistic journey led him to experiment with industrial materials and construction scraps. By repurposing these objects into frames for his photographs, DaNapoli discovered a symbiotic relationship between the frame and the image, where each enhances the other. His work reflects the concept of “second chances” as he breathes new life into discarded materials, giving them an opportunity to shine once again.

“New England Episodes” in the Meta Lacey Gallery

Featuring Don Leger

“Golden Lily Farm Shed” by Don Leger

A self-taught landscape artist, Don Leger delves into New England scenes, encompassing Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Nantucket, the place Leger enjoys the most, is the subject of most of his paintings. “A special interest resides within me about this magical place.”

Leger has been painting for 40 + years and has exhibited in Old Lyme, Mystic and Essex.

“CLOSEUP. New images” in the Stables Gallery

Featuring Paul Ott

When describing his upcoming exhibit, Ott explained…

I like details. You know those things that most people never look at. I like taking the closer look!

Barthes once said, “photographs that compel us never overpower or coerce; they attract us because they are pensive, they think.”

To help that thought along further, I have chosen a way that makes digital images less sterile.

Using vintage glass on my camera, the lens are from the 1930’s to the 1970’s, (all pre-digital) allows me to get different and creative results by using great glass from the past! For me it makes producing art, fun!
