Capturing the movement of objects in a still life can be challenging. How do we avoid making our paintings appear static?
In this one-day workshop, Karen will discuss principles of design, lighting, and still-life setup. She will explain pastel techniques. You will each paint from the set up and Karen will give individual attention to each artist and an informative critique of each artist's work will end the day.

Soft pastels come in varying degrees of hard/soft. They are sold in sets or single sticks.
Please contact Karen if you need advice regarding pastels to purchase.
Suggested brands for are usually sold in sets, but what is most important is to have a good variety of value(how dark and light a color is) and temperature(how much yellow is in the color). So a light, medium and dark of Reds, Yellows and Blues... Some greys and a white and a black.
· Paper: UART, cream color, no bigger than 16x 20 or any sanded pastel paper
· A board bigger than your paper to clip or tape the paper onto
· Artists tape or bull clips
· Paper towels
· Sketch paper
· Vine charcoal
· A flat nylon brush, about 1”
· Gloves
· Apron
· A terry towel to place under your easel
· OPTIONAL: JAR OF ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL
About Karen Israel
Karen Israel’s pastel paintings are defined by their dynamic compositions and unique viewpoints. She is influenced by the light and mood of the subject and lets those elements dictate her approach. These subjects are rendered with a strong appreciation for the rigors of formal design coupled with a fearless array of color choices.
In addition to numerous awards, Karen’s work has garnered the honor of Signature Member with the American Artists Professional League, Master Circle with the International Association of Pastel Societies and Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America. Karen is an artist member of the,The Copley Society, Boston, and the Lyme Art Association and is a past member of the Salmagundi Club, NYC.
Karen conducts many teaching demonstrations and workshops throughout the United States and has served as a juror for many national competitions.
In May 2022, Karen’s pastel paintings were on exhibit with Les Amis Des Arts in Pastels of the World in Bourbonnais, honoring American Women pastelists, in Montluçon, France.
Karen’s pastel paintings were featured twice in Practique Des Arts: August 2020, July 2018, and in Southwest Art Magazine in April 2021.
In March 2024, Karen was interviewed live on FOX61 for “Creative Futures” , featuring local artists.
